San Antonio Search - Local Business Listings - City Guides - SanAntonio.allaboutlocal.com San Antonio offers a diverse and intriguing blend of the Wild West and flavors of Old Mexico complemented by cosmopolitan present day attractions, cultural arts and outdoor activities. Dating back to its earliest days, San Antonio has had a colorful and sometimes violent history. Native Americans first lived along the San Antonio River and called the area Yanaguana, meaning “clear waters.” With the arrival of settlers, skirmishes were common. In 1718, Father Antonio Olivares, established a mission at the site of present day San Antonio. Later, the Spanish Governor’s Palace became the seat of government for the capital of the Spanish Province of Texas. In 1836, this mission was the site of the famous Battle of The Alamo when fewer than 200 settlers and troops held the old mission against 4,000 Mexican troops for 13 days before defeat and death. “Remember The Alamo” became the rally cry in the Texas war against Mexico. Fast forward to today. U.S. Army Fort Sam Houston, Randolph Air Force Base, Lackland Air Force Base Brook-City Base, Camp Bullis and Camp Stanley still offer a strong military presence in the San Antonio area.

San Antonio International Airport is about eight miles from downtown. San Antonio ground transportation is available by taxis, shuttles and rental cars. Amtrak offers rail service from San Antonio to Miami and Los Angeles with stops in major cities along the way. Between leisurely strolls along the River Walk, there are city bus routes, but getting around San Antonio is easiest by rental car when you want to include nearby day trips and outdoor activities.
